Did you know there are several renowned art galleries on campus featuring changing exhibitions and collections? Galleries are located in and around the Berrie Center, and admission is free<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Art Galleries are aligned with the School of Contemporary Arts and serve as a fertile resource for the College and area communities. In addition to faculty and senior thesis exhibitions, the Kresge and Pascal Galleries<\/a> in the Berrie Center present a vibrant, international contemporary exhibition schedule. Ramapo College is also home to one of the largest academic collections of Haitian Art in any U.S. academic institution, which is continuously presented in the Selden Rodman Gallery<\/a> of Popular Arts in B-Wing. The Learning Commons Gallery<\/a> features regional artists, collections, interdisciplinary shows, and occasional student projects.<\/p>\n

Lost Synagogues of Europe: Paintings and Histories brings to life seventy-seven European synagogues destroyed by antisemitism, war, and political upheaval, rendered in evocative gouache paintings and historical prose.<\/p>\n

Prints of these paintings by artist Andrea Strongwater will be on view in the Learning Commons from January 29th – March 31st.<\/p>\n

A group exhibition of contemporary artists curated by Director of the Art Galleries Sydney Jenkins and feminist artist and curator Donna Kessinger.<\/p>\n

Planned public programs include a lecture relating to goddesses history, a film screening and academic panel, exhibiting artists’ talks, and performance art.<\/p>\n

From the classical to fashion history to myth to popular culture and political art, this exhibition will flex numerous ways to think about the meaning of\u00a0Goddesses<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Artists represented range from Dara Birnbaum, Nancy Spero, Mary Beth Edelson, and Carolee Schneemann to Myrlande Constant, Vanessa Beecroft, and Mariko Mori, among others.<\/p>\n

This exhibition will be on view in through April 10th, with a reception on Wednesday, March 25th at 5 PM.<\/p>\n

Please join us in the Berrie Center Caf\u00e9 at 11:30 for a special talk by Art Historian Maria Loh in which\u00a0she bridges renaissance imagery and notions of misogyny.<\/span><\/p>\n

ABSTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kairos, Occasio, and Fortuna are complex facets of the same goddess of luck, but at a certain moment in time a troubling, schizophrenic iconography came into being, which cast Lady Luck as a distinctively female force, both a capricious agent controlling the Wheel of Fortune and also as a body that could be either violently seized or wildly adored. This lecture will explore the uneasy gendering of Fortuna in some early modern images such as an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi in the Metropolitan Museum that bears the descriptive title\u00a0A Naked Man Holding Fortune by the Hair and Whipping Her<\/em>. Rather than simply cancelling an image as such, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect upon the ideological work that such artworks accomplished in their own time and to push us to think about how we can and must make sense of them as twenty-first-century viewers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

ABOUT THE SPEAKER<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Maria H. Loh is Professor of Art History at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton<\/span>.\u00a0Previously, she taught at CUNY Hunter College for six years and\u00a0at University College London for over a decade. She is\u00a0a contributor to\u00a0Art in America<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0the author of three books\u2014Titian Remade. Repetition and the Transformation of Early Modern Italian Art<\/i>\u00a0(2007);\u00a0Still Lives. Death, Desire, and the Portrait of the Old Master<\/i>\u00a0(2015); and\u00a0Titian\u2019s Touch. Art, Magic, & Philosophy<\/i>\u00a0(2019). She has also written on: horror and\u00a0\u201cspecial affect\u201d in early modern painting and sculpture;\u00a0rainbow imagery in Stuart England;\u00a0melancholia and the Renaissance in Ottocento Italy; remakes in Chinese cinema; repetition in Hitchcock\u2019s\u00a0Vertigo<\/i>; seriality and Sherrie Levine; and the \u201copen work\u201d of Jeff Wall. Her forthcoming book\u2014Liquid Sky<\/i>\u2014will be written for a general audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the\u00a0GODDESSES 3.0<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>exhibition, on view February 25 – April 10, the Ramapo College Art Galleries are pleased to present a screening of Carolee Schneemann’s Ask the Goddess <\/em>(1991).<\/p>\n

Ask the Goddess<\/em> is a provocative performance in which Schneemann interacts with the audience by responding to sexual and psychic dilemmas read from cards they have submitted. A continuous relay of projected slides comprises an iconography of Goddess symbols, taboo and sacred, including images of animal attributes. Schneemann reacts spontaneously to the questions; she channels cogent answers triggered by the unpredictable images and finds herself physically activated, turning into a howling wolf or crawling across the projection area, squealing like a pig. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring Rachel Churner<\/a>, director of the Carolee Schneemann Foundation, Julie Nagle<\/a>, professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Donna Kessinger<\/a>, co-curator of GODDESSES 3.0 <\/em>and feminist video artist.<\/p>\n
